On January 15-17, 2020, The 1st International Conference on Big Data and Machine Learning in Microscopy was held in Kanazawa (https://mlm2020.aalto.fi), supported by the NanoLSI. The new era of big data and machine learning offers the potential to revolutionize the field of microscopy, particularly for high-resolution electron and scanning probe techniques. From detailed analysis to automation, it is possible to totally transform the process of imaging and provide a much greater reward in terms of new science and societal impact. The MLM20 meeting brought together pioneers who are bringing these new approaches to microscopy research and provided a discussion rich environment, and included a strong tutorial component, particularly suited for newcomers to the field and young researchers. The meeting involved about 40 researchers, with 25 coming from outside Japan and included 3 tutorials, 7 invited talks and 6 contributed talks with an emphasis on longer talks and more discussion.
