Professor Masanobu Oshima wins the 33rd Tomizo Yoshida Prize

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, at the 83rd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Cancer Association in Fukuoka, Professor Masanobu Oshima from the Nano Life Science Institute and the Cancer Research Institute at Kanazawa University was awarded the 33rd Tomizo Yoshida Prize.

The Tomizo Yoshida Prize, established in 1992 by the Japanese Cancer Association and the Yoshida Tomizo Kenshokai (Memorial Society based in Asakawa-machi, Fukushima Prefecture), honors the legacy of the renowned cancer researcher Dr. Tomizo Yoshida. It is awarded annually to a researcher who has made outstanding contributions to basic medical research and advanced the development of the Japanese Cancer Association.

Professor Oshima has conducted research at the individual level based on mouse genetics, revealing that the formation of an inflammatory microenvironment, caused by the induction of COX-2 expression in the gastrointestinal tumor stroma, promotes carcinogenesis. This discovery provides a rationale for the concept of preventing and treating cancer by controlling inflammatory responses. Additionally, by establishing an intestinal tumor organoid model with multiple driver gene mutations, they have significantly advanced our understanding of the mechanisms behind the metastasis of gastrointestinal cancer through the interaction of genetic mutations and the tumor microenvironment. These achievements have led to them receiving this award.
