The 47th NanoLSI Open Seminar “Cell Mechanics in Geometrically Defined Environments”
On April 4th, NanoLSI held the Open Seminar and 22 researchers and students participated.
During the seminar, Prof. Martin BASTMEYER from Zoological Institute, Cell and Neurobiology, Faculty of Chemistry and Biosciences Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Karlsruhe, Germany presented recent work from his research group using direct laser writing (DLW) to produce biofunctionalized, geometrically defined 3D cellular microenvironments. Prof. Bastmeyer described how these 3D-scaffolds can be used to measure cellular forces and to guide the self-renewal and differentiation of embryonic stem cells. Furthermore, he gave an outlook on recent approaches to develop stimuli-responsive resists for DLW. These materials change their mechanical properties upon an external stimulus and thus have great potential for applications to study cellular mechanobiology. His lecture provoked active discussion.
